It was proclaimed a week of mourning in Poland. On April 10, 2010, Polish President Lech Kaczynski and his wife Maria Kaczynski, together with 95 others died in a plane crash.

According to Russia’s Emergency Minister Sergei Shoigu, 88 out of the 97 people that died, were part of the Polish state delegation. The group was heading to Smolensk, Russia to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.
